AdRotate Geo temporarily shut down

Today I woke up to 22 emails that my website was offline-online-offline and so on. Turns out some users are once again abusing AdRotate Geo by sending millions of requests to my API.

AdRotate Geo serves around 3 million requests per day. And scales pretty well for small to medium sites. Currently there are a couple of hundred users subscribed to AdRotate Geo. But getting upwards of 40 million requests per hour is a bit too much for my servers.

So, DDoS then, again… But they’re all real AdRotate Pro users as far as I can see. Valid authentification keys and api access… After some digging it turns out that it was AdRotate Geo being hammered with traffic from a bunch of AdRotate Pro users sites. Millions of requests per site? Come on. That’s not real traffic. Can’t be… Or is it.

After a while I got fed up with it and shut AdRotate Geo down until further notice. Sorry for the inconvenience…

Please use ipstack instead. You can make a free account to get free lookups per month. Or, if you want the more accurate MaxMind GeoIP2 that’s of-course an option too – But not for free 🙂

If you have any questions of comments, please let me know below or via the contact form. Thanks.

I’ll try to figure out what to do with AdRotate Geo in the meantime 🙁

AdRotate Free 4.13.2 – Available now!

Updated the dashboard and made a few tweaks in the background so the plugin works better. Fixed a weird bug on PHP5.6 servers. If you run into other PHP warnings or errors, let me know as soon as possible so a fix can be investigated and applied.

Telegram proved to be useless as a chat/social media option so that has been removed. If you want to chat, use Facebook instead. That’s the fastest option for premium support or a quick question. Though this is aimed more to users of AdRotate Professional.

Changes

  • [fix] T_STRING error on activation on PHP5.6
  • [fix] Social links pointing to the wrong facebook account
  • [change] Removed Telegram as a contact option

Accidental discharge

Earlier this week I installed a USB socket on my motorbike and promptly discharged my battery while testing it. It took a while to figure out and re-charge…

AdRotate Pro 4.15 – Removed Transactions

An important update where the dashboard got some tweaks and optimisations. A few small bug fixes and the social stuff has been updated.

More importantly though, the underused Transactions Feature got removed. Current and ongoing transactions are still listed in the Advertisers dashboard in the sub menu Transactions. This is for reference.
No new transactions can be made or paid. All functionality has been removed.

As an alternative way, you can set up products in a plugin like WooCommerce.
If there is interest I’ll investigate making a connector plugin to create a more automated solution.

Changes

  • [fix] Group IDs not always passed properly
  • [fix] Advertiser stats export not always working

To the big city

I was in Cebu city in the Philippines last week. A 6 hour bus ride away from where I live. It was an ok experience. Shopping was fun and disappointing at the same time. This country has a long way to go in terms of product availability. Still on the upside, I ate a whole lot of food that’s not available here in Dumaguete and I bought new underwear 🙂
