ajdg.solutions is now federated in ActivityPub

Well, an update on this. I changed my mind. As fascinating as it is… This project has been cut short by the apparent lack of interaction between the Fediverse and its nodes or instances (such as this website). Without any discoverability features… What’s the point. I may write a blog post about that in the future.

With the surge in Mastodon users and plugins to hook up websites to ActivityPub becoming better and better I’ve decided to join in on the hype and federate my websites. Starting yesterday both AJdG Solutions and MotoTravel are federated.

This means that you can follow the posts users make on the blog can be followed from platforms like Mastodon, Pixelfed and anything that uses ActivityPub really.

To follow AJdG Solutions add @arnandegans@ajdg.solutions and to follow posts on MotoTravel look for @arnan@mototravel.net on your instance of choice.

You can click on the above links to copy them to your clipboard so you can easily paste them in any ActivityPub search, for example on your mastodon or Pixelfed instance. My feed will pop up in there and you can follow it as if you’re following a regular account.

Delayed license expiry email sent out today

Today the license notification system finally caught up with the final reminder for a bunch of AdRotate Professional licenses bought in the last 18 months. A calculating error prevented the email from sending out before today 🙄 Whoops!

All expiry dates are correct and have been correct but the trigger to the final expiry email was set at the wrong date and never matched with the expiry date for some licenses and thus never got sent out.

You are of-course highly encouraged to carefully read the email and the mentioned license and it’s expiry date so that there can be no confusion which license this is about!

If you have any questions or concerns about the expiry please check your license status in your account at https://ajdg.solutions/my-account/ or if that doesn’t clarify things sent an email via the contact form in your dashboard or on this website – Include your order number or license key for a quick answer.

The first and 2nd reminder sent out 7 and 2 days before the license expired were sent out on the right day. Just the final email never went out for a number of licensees. This has now been corrected and some 500 people got notified today – Some of these licenses expired a few weeks or months ago.

If you’ve already bought a new license recently you can probably ignore the email reminder. But if you were waiting for the final reminder to get your license – Now is the time. When you do, don’t forget the included discount offer for your new license!

AdRotate Geo for AdRotate Pro updated

AdRotate Geo Service just a new database. Up-to-date everything. New IP ranges, improved accuracy and all the latest Geo information you’ll need to get your adverts to the right audience. Periodic updates of AdRotate Geo are necessary to keep things accurate and fast.

Accuracy

AdRotate Geo almost never uses the latest data, so over time the accuracy erodes a bit. 2 or 3 times a year the database gets refreshed with the latest data which fixes that. As you may know AdRotate Geo uses MaxMinds GeoLITE2 databases. Which are pretty good. They’re also pretty big. So updating them is a bit of a hassle. Anyway, as of today they are up-to-date again.

New data should trickle in as your caches and session data expires over the next few days. You can expect to see an improvement in accuracy within a few days.

What is AdRotate Geo

If you use AdRotate Pro you probably know what AdRotate Geo is. This is my self-hosted, or custom built, geo targeting service. Not everyone wants to or can afford external geo targeting services. So I’ve made my own. This is super useful if you want to target certain areas in the world like a city, state or country with your adverts.

Access to AdRotate Geo is included with your license for AdRotate Pro and you can easily enable it from your dashboard through Settings > Geo Targeting.

Geo Targeting is a useful tool for targeted adverts. If you’re selling or promoting something to people living in New York. It usually makes no sense to show that advert to someone in Tokyo. So to fix that you use Geo Targeting. Likewise if you have a product that applies to Spanish speaking people. Other languages probably don’t need to see that. So you can use Geo Targeting to target Spanish speaking countries.

Use an advertising network or sell ad space yourself?

Header Sell your own adverts

It’s easy, lazy and super convenient to join an advertising network such as Google AdSense or Media.net or something similar. You can create an account in minutes, get ads immediately and see earnings within a week or so. It’s boring and anyone can do it. But if your site is big enough from the get-go it may be easy money and work fine for your purposes.

The real fun starts when you sell your own ad spaces. That leaves you in control and with AdRotate and AdRotate Pro you can easily manage which advert goes where and for how long. You make the rules and, within reason, you decide what happens. And that’s not a bad thing at all.
